Arts and Entertainment Online - 36 Hours


Arts & Entertainment Online
36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits), Course becomes available on September 25th, 2020 at 5pm PST
The Arts and Entertainment (A&E) Online Course will help you build your creative skills and get you in touch with your inner artist! This course gives you an in-depth look at visual and performing arts in the U.S., and provides the unique opportunity for you to meet and take interactive classes from professionals in the field. Our activities and classes, including artist-led workshops, will teach you about photography, art, acting, dance and music. You will learn about the important role the arts play in social change, and hear valuable tips from professionals about how to pursue a career in this industry, including an exclusive interview with an Emmy award winning director and producer! Please note, there will be a required live component for this course. All additional coursework will be self-paced and you can finish the course in as little as two weeks. The course includes a combination of pre-recorded classes and workshops, projects and assignments that can be completed independently, and live sessions with artists. Already have experience in the arts? Deepen your skills with this course! No background in arts and entertainment? That's okay! Discover the U.S. Online
36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits), self-paced, Course becomes available on September 25th, 2020 at 5pm PST
Discover what the United States has to offer! Our combination of pre-recorded lecture classes, virtual tours, online discussions, and assignments are designed to help you make the most of your time here in the States. In this course, you will learn key facts about American history and culture, and examine how these have influenced the American Dream. You will gain in depth knowledge of U.S. geography, history, politics and government, as well as U.S. rituals and traditions. You will learn about cowboy culture and the history of the Southwest region of the U.S., and virtually discover America’s most beautiful landscapes and national parks! In addition to gaining a greater understanding of the United States, you will also have the opportunity to share your home country’s culture with other students and compare it to key aspects of American life. Explore Our Environment Online - 36 Hours


Explore Our Environment Online 36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits), self-paced, open enrollment Would you like to learn more about our environment, the exciting field of environmental science, or how to help solve environmental problems? Then this Explore Our Environment Online Course is for you! The Explore Our Environment Online Course provides an introduction to the field of environmental science, and gives you an opportunity to meet and take pre-recorded lecture classes with an experienced instructor and an expert in the field. Assignments and activities in the course are designed to allow you to explore the environment in a way that promotes critical thinking, research, and creative problem solving skills. You will also participate in interactive online discussions with fellow students where we will discuss environmental concerns and solutions related to your host community, the United States, your home country and globally. You will learn about important topics within the field of environmental science, such as climate change, natural disasters, sustainability, careers in the environmental science field, and creating environmental policy. Make a Difference Online- 36 Hours


Make a Difference Online
36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits), self-paced, Course becomes available on September 25th, 2020 at 5pm PST
Learn the skills you need to make a positive difference in your community and in your own personal life! Through a combination of pre-recorded lecture classes, engaging activities and online discussions with fellow students, this course teaches how you can be the change you want to see in the world. You will learn how to better cope with challenging situations through mindfulness and conflict resolution classes. Share your cultural background and experiences with fellow au pairs, and learn about the rich cultural diversity present in U.S. communities. Build your cultural awareness skills and learn techniques about how to successfully collaborate with people who are different from you. Storytelling and Filmmaking Online - 36 Hours


Storytelling & Filmmaking Online
36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits); Course becomes available at 5pm PST on September 28th, 2020
In the Storytelling and Filmmaking Online Course, you will explore narrative storytelling, script writing, and filmmaking to help you bring your stories to life! This online course provides an in-depth look at each step of the film production process and will also introduce you to scriptwriting, script analysis, camera techniques, directing, acting, storyboarding, and post-production. You will learn about new ways of connecting and storytelling during this challenging time, and you will create your own short film as a final project. Most of the coursework is self-paced, although it will include one live interactive session during the second week of the course, so the course will take about 4 weeks to complete. No special filmmaking equipment is necessary, and you will be provided with a list of mobile apps you can use to film and edit on your own. You will need a smartphone and preferably a laptop or tablet for this course, although the necessary software can be accessed on a smartphone. 36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits); Pre-assignments will become available October 9th, 2020 Discover what the United States has to offer in an exciting new interactive virtual weekend format! You will earn your 36 educational hours through 20 weekend hours of live interactive virtual classes with fellow au pairs, and 16 hours of assignments that are completed independently. In this course, you will learn key facts about American history, culture and the American Dream in a fun and engaging way. You will also gain in depth knowledge of U.S. geography, politics and government, as well as learn about U.S. rituals and traditions, including the upcoming holidays! The virtual weekend provides opportunities for you to discuss current events with your fellow classmates like the 2020 presidential election, and compare key aspects of American life with your own culture. Coursework includes several pre-assignments, to be completed before the virtual weekend, 20 hours of virtual classes and activities during the weekend (see schedule below), and several post-assignments, to be completed after the virtual weekend. CLASS MEETING SCHEDULE:

Global Citizen Service Learning: Environmental Awareness & Advocacy in Costa Rica - 36 Hours


36 hours (equivalent of 3 credits); Course will become available on October 9th, 2020 at 5pm PST Virtual Volunteering Project Focus: You will work with an environmental reserve in Costa Rica, to help educate people about the reserve and its importance in the local community. You will be working with an environmental reserve in Costa Rica, that supplies the local communities and their surroundings with a nature preserve, and a necessary source of income from ecotourism. The reserve includes populations of various animals that have been endangered, such as the tapir, jaguar, and quetzal, which have been revived thanks to the efforts of the reserve. You will be learning about the reserve’s goals and mission, and the challenges facing the reserve and conservation in general. You will help create marketing, promotional and workshop material for the reserve, so that they can reach a wider audience and bring in more financial support to the region. You have the exciting opportunity to help this reserve and support the surrounding communities by increasing awareness and educating others. This course is approximately 6 weeks in length, including all pre and post assignments. You will be expected to join a one hour long weekly Zoom meeting with your organization and project group. You will have one assignment per week (approximately 5 hours in length) that will be due before the zoom meeting, and a final project due at the end of the course. You will also complete a self-paced Global Citizenship Leadership training as part of this course. After completing all course work, APW will provide you a completion letter from UCLA for the 36 educational hours, and United Planet will also provide a bonus certificate for participating in their Global Citizenship Leadership training. This class is a total of 36 hours (equivalent to 3 credits). You will need access to a smart device to participate in the live meetings and submit your work. Cameras must be on at all times during virtual meetings and internet connection must be stable. *Weekly live meetings will be held via Zoom on Thursdays (October 15th, October 22nd, October 29th, November 5th) at 5 pm PST / 8 pm EST from Costa Rica. If you have a conflict with one or more of the live session dates/times, please contact registration@aupairclasses.org to discuss possible alternatives





CANCELLATION POLICY

Online Courses Cancellation (All courses EXCEPT the "Discover U.S. Virtual Weekend"): Refunds for online courses can be requested, minus a $50 administrative fee, up to one week after registering. If you need to cancel 1-3 weeks after registering, we can provide you with a voucher minus a $25 switch fee to use for a future course within the next six months. This voucher is transferable to another au pair if you are unable to use it. Students will not receive Completion Letters for partial hours.

Discover the U.S. Virtual Weekend Cancellation: Refunds for the Discover the U.S. Virtual Weekend courses can be requested, minus a $50 administrative fee, up to 48 hours before the class start date. If you would like to switch courses, we can provide you with a voucher, minus a $25 switch fee, up to 48 hours before the class start date. This voucher can be used for any future APW course within a 6 month period. This voucher is transferable to your host family or another au pair if you are unable to use it. Students will not receive Completion Letters for partial hours.

 

Please note when registering for two courses: If you register for two 36 hour courses at our discounted pricing of $500, and one class is later canceled, the discounted course price of $205 is what will be eligible for a refund regardless of which course is being cancelled. Students are not eligible to later add a second course at the discounted price of $205. Students must register for both courses at the same time and they must keep both courses in order to receive the discounted rate of $500 for two online course offerings.
