Learn about community and American culture, and make global connections through our Make a Difference and Discover the U.S. courses. Created just for au pairs, these courses will help you navigate the many emotions and experiences that come with living abroad in the United States.

Excursions: during this six day course, we will be spending time in historic Honolulu, hiking to a waterfall, snorkeling at one of the beautiful Honolulu beaches, and visiting the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie.

Attendance is mandatory beginning with check-in Monday, July 29, at 4:00 pm, and does not end until Saturday, August 3 at 12:00 pm. Students are expected to attend the full week and complete all assignments to receive their Completion Letter. We understand emergencies and important scheduling conflicts can occur, so please contact the program coordinator as soon as possible if there is a situation that prevents you from meeting any of these requirements.

Be sure to plan for travel time between the airport and classIf you will be flying to Hawaii on the day of check-in (Monday, July 29), please book a flight that arrives no later than 3:00 p.m. If you will be flying home on the last day of class (Saturday, August 3), please do not schedule a flight that leaves before 3:00 p.m. Students will need to plan their own transportation to the University of Manoa Frear Hall for Monday check-in. All transportation for excursions during the week will be provided by Au Pair Weekend. After the course ends, students will be responsible for their own transportation off campus.

We strongly encourage students to fly to Hawaii a day or two before the course begins or to stay a couple of days after the course in order to have time to explore on your own. Our course is scheduled with LONG days (often 12 hour days or longer), so please plan free time for yourself before or after the course dates.
After registering for this course, you’ll get a link to join Canvas the day that your pre-assignments become available.

Course hours include pre-weekend assignments, post-weekend assignments, and a course evaluation. Check with your au pair agency regarding hours and credits, as requirements vary. Scheduled activities may be subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances and may be different from previous weekends.

Optional Add-On Excursions

For an additional fee during registration, you can add-on this optional activity:

  • Saturday, August 3rd travel by charter bus to two destinations:

    • Pearl Harbor, a U.S. naval base that was attacked by Japanese forces on December 7, 1941. This attack directly led to U.S. involvement in World War II. We will travel by boat to the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, which marks the resting place of 1,102 sailors and Marines killed on that ship during that attack.

    • Dole Pineapple Plantation. The Dole Plantation is a popular visitor attraction and includes a fun gift shop and cafe, a Pineapple Express Train Tour, the Plantation Garden Tour, and the Pineapple Garden Maze.

This excursion runs 12:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will work for any students who have a flight home after 8:00 p.m. on Saturday. The charter bus will drop off students at either the Honolulu airport or in downtown Honolulu. Price: $70.
