Celebrating American Culture With Au Pair Weekend

The United States turns 250 this Fourth of July, and we couldn't let the occasion pass without reflecting on what makes this milestone meaningful to us.

For 20 years, we've had the privilege of introducing thousands of au pairs from around the world to American history, culture, and community. Helping people genuinely understand and connect with this country (to not just live in it, but to be a part of it) is at the heart of everything we do.

We asked students from some of our recent courses to share what stood out to them about their time experiencing U.S. culture through APW. Their words speak for themselves.

I had an amazing time with Au Pair Weekend in Washington, D.C.! I already live close to D.C., but this program helped me see the city in a fun new way. I loved visiting the U.S. Capitol and the Milken Center, and it was great having free time to choose our own adventures. The best part of the weekend was the people. It was so easy to make friends with other au pairs. We walked around famous museums, ate good food together, and I even got to be a local guide for my new friends. Au Pair Weekend is the perfect mix of learning, sightseeing, and having fun. I highly recommend it to any au pair who wants to get their school credits and make memories that will last a lifetime.” - Laura, France

“I think the choice of doing my credit course with the Au Pair Weekend in Texas was the best choice I could make. The course was packed with activities, both inside and outside the classroom. We were a big group from all over the world and that was something great. I got to learn not only things about Texas' culture but from cultures around the world. The overall experience was GREAT, the teachers were amazing and knew what to do at all times, they were respectful, kind, calm and really competent. I would recommend this experience to any AuPair that is interested in an in-person class because it was a wonderful and fulfilling experience, full of laughter, fun and adventure but also culture and history.” - Claudia, Italy

“I had such a great time at the Au Pair Weekend! I learned a lot about the U.S. government, geography, and the cultures of my fellow au pairs. I really enjoyed being in Chicago. Its energy and charm completely captivated me. Everyone was so friendly, and the coordinators were attentive and encouraging. It was a well organized, fun, and memorable weekend, and I loved meeting amazing people from all over the world.” - Leidy Viviana, Colombia

“My experience with Au Pair Weekend was amazing and very enriching. The program was well organized, and all the instructors were dynamic, welcoming, and passionate. They made the classes interesting and interactive, while sharing a lot of useful information throughout the weekend. I really enjoyed the visits and activities, especially the Capitol tour and the free exploration time, which allowed us to discover Washington, D.C. in our own way. This weekend helped me learn more about American culture, broaden my perspective, and meet new people. I came on my own and was able to make great friends, which made the experience even more special. Thank you to the entire Au Pair Weekend team for this wonderful weekend!” - Louise, France

These are the moments that remind us why cultural education matters. America's 250th birthday is a milestone for everyone who calls this country home, even temporarily. We're proud to play a small part in making that experience richer and more meaningful for people who've traveled so far to be here. We love this country, and it is a genuinely wonderful feeling to help others come to love it too. Happy Independence Day from the Au Pair Weekend team!

This title really brought back memories! My family hosted an au pair from Germany a few years back, and it was such a wonderful experience. We lived in a pretty rural area, and I remember one weekend we decided to take her to a local fall festival. It wasn't anything grand, just hayrides, apple cider, and a pumpkin patch, but seeing her eyes light up at all the simple, distinctly American traditions was so special https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cereus_Poker_Network She kept saying how "quaint" and "charming" everything was. It made me appreciate our own culture in a new way, seeing it through fresh eyes. It’s amazing how these shared experiences can bridge gaps and create such strong bonds. I’m curious, what specific aspects…

This post really brought back memories of when my younger sister was an au pair in France. She was so excited to experience everything, and her host family made a huge effort to show her around. One weekend, they took her to a small village festival that was all about local traditions – music, food, crafts, the whole nine yards http://www.espn.com/blog/poker/post/_/id/2509/pokerstars-launches-new-jersey-online-poker-platform She said it was so much more meaningful than just visiting a famous landmark because she got to see how people *actually* lived and celebrated. It sounds like your au pair weekend had a similar vibe, a chance to truly immerse yourselves. It's those authentic experiences that stick with you long after the trip is over, isn't it? I'm…
