Learn about community and American culture, and make global connections through our Discover & Connect in the U.S. courses. Created just for au pairs, these courses will help you navigate the many emotions and experiences that come with living abroad in the United States. Build connections with your au pair classmates through a variety of excursions, activities, and engaging in class discussions.
To accommodate travel time between the airport and class, plan to arrive for your course on a flight NO LATER than 11:30 am on Friday and depart no earlier than 6:30 pm on Monday.
Attendance is mandatory beginning on Friday with check-in, and does not end until Monday at 4:00 p.m. Students are expected to attend the full weekend and complete all assignments to receive their Completion Letter. We understand emergencies and important scheduling conflicts can occur, so please contact the program coordinator as soon as possible if there is a situation that prevents you from meeting any of these requirements.
After registering for this course, you’ll get a link to join Canvas the day that your pre-assignments become available.
Hours include pre-weekend assignments, post-weekend assignments, and a course evaluation. Check with your au pair agency regarding hours and credits, as requirements vary. Scheduled activities may be subject to change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances and may be different from previous weekends.
Courses are offered in collaboration with
San Diego's nickname is "America's Finest City" - take a class here to find out why! With sunny, warm weather year-round and plenty of beaches, parks and cultural history to enjoy, San Diego has something for everyone.
Students will visit and learn about California history in Old Town, as well as explore Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in North America. They will also explore a beautiful Southern California beach town, visit downtown San Diego's beautiful waterfront, and visit another San Diego gem.
HOUSING
Reserve Housing with Your APW Registration
San Diego Housing is NOT included in the price of tuition.
Students may add housing at a hostel approximately 15 minutes by foot to our classroom building. Beds are limited and may sell out; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You can add a 3-night stay (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) at the hostel in a shared dorm room. When possible, we will place you in a room with other au pairs.
There will be a $50 administration fee for all housing refunds. Refunds only allowed up to 30 days prior to the weekend start date.
San Diego Housing is provided ONLY for students who sign up for housing through our registration site. This is a courtesy for our students and it is only available on a first-come, first-served basis. There may not be enough rooms and beds to accommodate all students.
Important Note: Please keep travel time to/from campus in mind if you arrange housing on your own.
TRANSPORTATION TO CAMPUS
Public Transportation
For public transport options to San Diego City College, you can use the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS):
-
Bus: Multiple bus routes serve the area. Bus routes like 12, 901, and 215 stop near Park Blvd.
-
Trolley: The San Diego Trolley Blue Line and Orange Line stop at the nearby City College Station, just a short walk from the address.
You can plan your route using the MTS trip planner or Google Maps for exact times and options.
Travel Between Airport & Campus
The best airport (and really only airport) for students to fly into is the San Diego International Airport.
The best ways to get to campus from the airport:
-
Rideshare/Taxi: This is the quickest and most convenient option, taking about 10 minutes.
-
Public Transit: Take the 992 bus from the airport to Broadway & Park Blvd, then walk about 10 minutes to your destination. This trip takes around 25-30 minutes.
